Recently the practice of fasting has been gaining popularity and it's no surprise. For over ten years, I have been practicing fasting sessions of 7-10 days, three to four times a year. From my experience I can confidently say ,that long-term, conscious preventive fasting is an extremely effective way to detoxify the body and improve both mental and emotional well-being. This is especially relevant in today's unstable conditions, with increased daily stress.

However, if fasting is done incorrectly, you can not only fail to achieve the desired results but you could also harm your body. Conscious fasting means, that you strictly follow all the procedures, outlined in this practice, as well as properly break the fast. In this article I will discuss the key procedures and their significance.

Let's start with the essential procedures: enemas and tubage.

Tubage, or gastric tubing, is the process of cleansing the body from excess bile and detoxifying the liver and gallbladder. It is an extremely important DAILY (!!!) procedure during fasting, one that should not be ignored. It is a proven method for removing toxins from the body and normalizing blood circulation.

Tubage is used to normalize blood circulation in the vessels and the movement of bile. This procedure also allows:

  • To rid the body of excess bile: improve its secretion and eliminate stagnation;
  • To cleanse the bile ducts;
  • To remove toxins from the body;
  • To cleanse gently the liver and gallbladder.

The entire procedure takes about 1.5-2 hours and can easily be done at home.

Take a handful of rose hips, pour boiling water over them and let it steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink. This is the simplest method.

An alternative is the medication "Holosas" (one teaspoon per glass of water).

Magnesium sulfate – dissolve it in a glass of hot water and drink it 15 minutes after taking the rose hip infusion or "Holosas." Drink it in three sips over 15 minutes. To be honest, the taste is not very pleasant, so you can squeeze a quarter of a lemon into the glass to improve the flavor.

Hot water bottle. After taking the supplements, place a hot (but not too hot) water bottle on the right side of your body and keep it there for 1 to 1.5 hours, until the urge to defecate arises. During this time it’s recommended not to lie down to make the cleansing more effective. I tie the hot water bottle with a belt under my robe to keep my movements unrestricted.

After one to two hours after tubage, perform an enema. This procedure takes about 30 minutes and thhough it is not very pleasant, it is absolutely necessary.

Why is this so important? Without thorough cleansing of the intestines, you can seriously poison yourself with toxins! During fasting the body continues to absorb actively substances from the intestines and if there are fecal masses there, just imagine what the body is absorbing! That’s why daily cleansing with an enema is crucial—it’s an integral part of detox. I once devoted a lot of time for studying various practices and realized, that none of the serious ones go without cleansing the intestines. There are different ways to do this. The enema is the simplest and most understandable. The Indians say: "Until you cleanse your intestines, there's no point in talking to you because you’re dirty."

Buy a modern, comfortable 2-liter enema kit. Try to avoid the old Soviet models. No special solution is needed for this—just clean water.

Water is another essential procedure: your body needs water, especially during fasting. Calculate your ideal daily water intake using formulas available online, and drink throughout the day, including at night if you can’t sleep.

Walking in fresh air – at least 30 minutes in the morning and the same in the evening before bed. It’s better without a phone. Right now, your body needs fresh air and moderate physical activity, and your mind needs the mental relaxation, that comes from observing the beauty of the surrounding world (for "fasting" walks, it’s best to choose a park or forest).

Light physical activity – DAILY joint gymnastics is a MUST. You can also add yoga or light training at the gym (without overdoing it, but still essential). Why is this important? During fasting the body "consumes" 90% fat and 10% muscle mass. That’s why it’s important to show your body that muscles are necessary, that they are actively engaged and shouldn’t be "eaten." Our body is very intelligent; it will optimize its energy and strength, figuring out where to take what it needs. A bonus from light physical activity is that your well-being will noticeably improve if you do everything correctly and don’t overstrain.

Jade Frog – a special exercise, that helps overcome feelings of hunger, which (especially in the first few days) will periodically trouble you. Perform this several times a day. It’s simple but effective. While standing or sitting, place your hands on your stomach, take a deep breath, and simultaneously pull in your stomach. Hold your breath for two to three seconds, then exhale, relaxing your belly. Repeat this exercise ten times.

Mantra – It should be recited every morning after waking up and every evening before sleep. It is an integral part of mindfulness and helps you properly tune into the fasting process. I wrote the text a few years ago and am happy to share it with you:

"Today is the best day of my life!

Today (specify the day: first, second, seventh, etc.) is the day of conscious preventive fasting.

Today my dear body is being cleansed of all toxins and waste, from everything unnecessary and harmful.

Today every cell of my beautiful body is filled with health, youth, energy, and HAPPINESS!

And so it will be!"

Tracking Weight and Well-Being – The first thing I always did when preparing for a fasting session was to start a journal for recording my weight and the sensations I experienced each day of fasting. Tracking both weight and physical (as well as mental) state is crucial for a better understanding of how your body works and the correctness of the process.

Massage – This is a very useful procedure as it helps to relax muscles, normalize lymphatic and blood circulation. Ideally you should visit a massage therapist every other day.

Sauna – When you steam, your pores open, toxins are released through the skin, muscles relax and fatigue is relieved. It’s important, that the sauna isn’t too hot. Personally I prefer to steam at the temperature of 80–90 degrees Celsius. Sit for five minutes, rest and repeat the procedure about three times. The key is comfort. Avoid cold water showers – it’s better not to put unnecessary stress on your body. Ideally steam every other day, but if that’s not possible, plan at least two sauna visits during your fasting session. A good alternative can be a warm bath before bed (it also helps to overcome chills).

These are the basic procedures and following them during a 7- or 10-day fasting session will help you to gain the maximum benefit and satisfaction from the practice. Another important rule: breaking the fast should be gradual, following a special diet. For example, after ten days of fasting, the refeeding process should last five days.

Finally, I’ll note: whatever we practice, the responsibility for our lives lies entirely on us. Of course, I recommend consulting a doctor before starting a 7- or 10-day fast. Alsokeep in mind, that traditional medicine approaches this practice with caution, due to the lack of established protocols.
